The book is overall well written and well organized. All chapters start with a boxed section of pearls in bullet points and end with abundant references. Most chapters have high-quality illustrative drawings, with some decent quality photos of operations, as well as pre- and postoperative patient photos. The Rhinoplasty section is well covered with ten chapters addressing the major categories of Asian nasal aesthetic surgery. They cover almost all the popular demands, common problems, and complications of cosmetic rhinoplasty of East Asian subjects. Presentation of the treatment algorithms is clear and well delivered.
The diagrammatic illustrations, pre- and postoperative photos are in general of excellent quality. For completeness, there is a chapter dedicated to Southeast Asians highlighting the contrasts of their features with that of East Asians. The Blepharoplasty section includes several highly sought-after procedures, namely double eyelid creation, ageing upper eyelid correction, eye bag surgery, epicanthoplasty, and ptosis surgery. With few exceptions, the presentations are overall sufficiently covered and clearly delivered, with good illustrative diagrams and photos.
Most of the diagrammatic and photographic illustrations were of excellent quality. In attempting to cover wide areas, the book became necessarily brief in many topics, for example, in the sections on facial skeletal surgery and nonsurgical facial treatments. It did not provide DVD video demonstrations, which otherwise would be useful in demonstrating certain selected procedures.
In the double eyelid section, it did not include the small-incision techniques, which have gained considerable popularity in recent years. This is a pity in an otherwise fairly well-covered section. The chapter on epicanthoplasty and lateral canthoplasty is also very brief, consisting mostly of text descriptions together with some illustrative drawings that are not as cohesive as those found in other chapters of the book.
In particular, operative photos and diagrams and pre- and postoperative patient photos are conspicuously lacking. The Facial Bony Surgery section gives a reasonable glimpse of facial contouring and orthognathic surgery. However, in many places, such as the chapters on zygomatic reduction and bimaxillary surgery, the contents are quite brief and illustrations are lacking. In summary, this is a handy and useful reference book for surgeons practicing aesthetic facial surgeries for East Asian patients.
